My name is Briana Smith. In 2012, I moved from my small, close-knit town of Totowa, N.J. to the large, thriving Long Island area to pursue my aspirations of becoming a journalist. I earned my B.A. and M.A. in journalism from Hofstra University in May 2017.
Growing up as a biracial female, I knew my sister and I were different living in a predominantly white town. I’d try to avoid the “What are you?” question and erased any negative comments that came my way. As I matured and discovered my identity in college, I wondered if other biracial individuals experienced the same issues. So, I explored. Through writing this story, not only did I highlight the biracial community — a subject I think is often overlooked — but I connected with other biracial individuals, found answers to my lingering questions about identity, and became even more proud of who I am.
My career journey will begin as an on-camera general assignment reporter. My ultimate goal is to inform and inspire the public through my writing; by achieving this, I will fulfill my purpose in life.
